Over 70 Chinese villagers infected with Hepatitis C after injections from doctor who ‘never changed his needles’

More than 70 villagers in southern China have contracted Hepatitis C after receiving injections or intravenous drips at a clinic.

The residents of a village on the outskirts of Hunan province’s city of Changde blame the spread of the infectious viral disease on their village doctor, Thecover.cn reports.

Hepatitis C primarily affects the liver and, in the long-term, could lead to liver disease or a hardening of the organ.

The villagers said their only doctor “never changed his syringe needles” after giving injections.

One villager said she raised the issue with the doctor but was told the needles were reused only after they had been sterilised.

“I didn’t expect this to lead to such a big problem,” she was quoted as saying.

Local medical authorities have opened an investigation, the report said.

Dozens of the villagers showed symptoms of fatigue in April and May, after they received shots or IV drips administered by the doctor at his clinic.

At the initial stages of infection of Hepatitis C, people often show mild symptoms, including fatigue, appetite loss, fever, stomach pains and yellow-tinged skin.

Most of them are now in stable condition after receiving treatment at larger hospitals in Changde.

But many, still recovering, say they can no longer withstand the kind of hard labour they were used to.
