Hampshire HOPE forum will bring attention to rising Hepatitis C rates, local opioid crisis

A Department of Public Health official will describe rising rates of Hepatitis C in the area in relation to the opioid epidemic at an upcoming forum.

Hampshire HOPE, Hampshire County's opioid abuse prevention coalition, is hosting the meeting on July 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Hadley Farms Meeting House. The forum will also delve into the new state opioid law, according to the Northwestern District Attorney's Office.

Anthony Osinski of the Department of Public Health will explain the increasing diagnoses of Hepatitis C in the area, and what the state and local communities can do to reverse that trend.

Injection drug use is the primary way people become infected with Hepatitis C, the DA's Office notes. Osinski will present data on state and local contraction rates for the virus.

Hepatitis C is transmitted in infected blood and causes chronic liver disease.

In March, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker signed opioid legislation into law that sets prescription limits on opioid drugs, increased education surrounding opioid addiction in schools and altered emergency room requirements for overdose cases.

Maryann Frangules of the Massachusetts Organization for Addiction Recovery will explain the various moving parts of the legislation, Hampshire HOPE said, and will discuss specific initiatives and strategies to prevent opioid deaths that are part of the law.
