The health ministry is planning to launch a national-level campaign
against liver diseases this year, partly in response to the prevalence
of Hepatitis B in Myanmar, with which 6.5 per cent of the population is
infected, announced the Liver Foundation.
Dr Khin Pyone Kyi from the Liver Foundation said: “In a bid to launch a nationwide project, we had to conduct a test on whether liver disease is a health problem [in Myanmar]. More than 400 million people around the world suffer from Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. About 1.5 million people die of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C every year. The nationwide project includes free vaccinations and treatments. Myanmar gives medical treatment and vaccination against malaria and [other diseases] free of charge.”
From May to November 2015, a nationwide survey was conducted on 5,547 people between the ages of 15 and 80. More than half of them were between 20 and 39 years old, and more than 70 per cent of them were female. According the results, six in 100 people are infected with Hepatitis B, three in 100 people are infected with Hepatitis C and 0.04 per cent are infected with both.
According to the nationwide survey, Yangon Region sees most cases of these liver diseases. Thirteen in 100 people are infected with Hepatitis B in Yangon Region, while 10 in 100 people are infected with Hepatitis C in Mon state.
