BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government on Saturday suspended a doctor and
sacked two employees of VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research
(VIMSAR) in connection with alleged transfusion of infected blood to two persons in the hospital recently.
The health and family welfare department, in a statement, said Dr Rajendra Patnaik, in-charge of blood bank at VIMSAR, was suspended. A laboratory technician and a data entry operator working at the blood bank were removed from service for administrative lapses.
The government action follows allegation of infected blood, one HIV and another hepatitis C, being transfused on two patients, which came to light on June 15.
VIMSAR, however, ruled out hepatitis C infection citing results of its ELISA test on the donor's sample, results of which came on Friday.
There is no clarity on HIV infection as yet. VIMSAR superintendent Braja Mohan Mishra, said, everything will be clear by Monday.
A private TV channel on Saturday reported that the authorities had started administering HIV treatment to the patient, who was allegedly given HIV infected blood. The superintendent however denied the report.
